The apocalypse came and went. While civilization picks up the pieces, Derek concentrates on breaking the runic bindings placed on him by expanding his magical expertise. Cut off from the influence of their undead god, vampires are going feral as they come under the influence of a less respectable god of the dead and undead. Another thing on his list of things to do. Then there is the rogue demon lord who is due to incarnate and pick up his plans to rule the ten chained worlds where he left off. He should look into that as well...

A Dragon at the Gate The Chained Worlds Chronicles Daniel Ruth Books

A solid sequel in which the arrogant and still likable Derek is reluctantly dealing with all the fires that an apocalypse creates while trying to learn more about magic and find a cure for his curse. Some of those fires are easier to deal with as others, leading him to visit the circle mage's world and dating another dragon. Throughout we deal with old friends, most notably Beth and Stella, and get to meet a few new characters from this entertaining mash of genres and settings.

As with book 1, it is Derek's character and behavior that is most entertaining about the book. His arrogance is well-founded, but he is not unbeatable. Considering he deals with older dragons, demons and lesser deities the read still sees the threat even if Derek himself might be a tad dismissive of the danger. There is less of an overarching plot/focus than in book 1. The issue with vampires going feral is the main thread, but it is not all that prominent and it might feel a bit disjointed to some. No cliffhangers though and a decent end point. We do get to see a bit more of the other worlds caught in the demon lords net and how he ensnared help with his plot.

All in all, a fun entertaining read and looking forward to the next part. Lets hope we get to see it quickly ;)

A Dragon at the Gate The Chained Worlds Chronicles Daniel Ruth Books Reviews

Is The characters arrogance is more amusing than fun? Hard to tell, but I greatly enjoyed his intrinsic ignorance married to great knowledge and power, A dichotomy that was actually done believably.
Our hero progresses along nicely, learning new styles of magic and training up his 'pets'. The ending is a bit quick and not subtle. But a reasonably good book that still has editing/spelling problems.
Love the humour and the story has gone in interesting directions. Spelling is a bit more of an issue but this was only revision 2. The best part of this series continues to be Derek's character. Ruth has nailed the psychology of a dragon brilliantly. I hope a part 3 appears soon. The story almost finished mid-paragraph!
A great follow up. Just like the first book one of the best parts is hearing the internal thoughts of Derek. The way he thinks and views things as opposed to everyone else is hilarious. I'm looking forward to the 3rd one hopefully it will be out sooner gotta get my dragon fix.
Really, it's a great book. Maybe even 5-star worthy, but unfortunately, the editing errors that plagued the first book of the series continue here. Really, it would be so easy to have someone proof-read this and fix the myriad errors and turn this into a first-class offering.

I recommend it as a read, but be prepared to be jarred out of the storyline periodically as you try to figure out what the author intended to say.
If you enjoyed the first book in the series and like your main characters to be somewhat of a wise cracking smarty than you will likely enjoy this book too. It draws heavily on the Rifts roleplaying system for its dragon lore but you don't need to be familiar with that system to enjoy the story. Our young dragon continues to try to wrym his way to freedom )
This is great sequel to the first novel Derek is as usual arrogant and over confident and very funny. The author's sense of humor shows through and I appreciate his ability to quote and otherwise reference Monty Python

Beth and Stella are the only repeat characters that get any real page time. Beth hypnotizing her brother Jeremy into letting her go on dangerous outings with Derek was a lot of fun especially the scene where Derek and Jeremy finally figure it out. As with the last book the story line continues to be engaging and consistent.

The larger plot in this installment focuses on all of the vampires in the chained world going "feral" because the events perpetrated by the demon lord at the end of the first book isolated them from their patron gods and a malicious god that is on one of the ten worlds has started taking over the vampires free will causing them to go feral. There is not a lot of time devoted to this aspect of the overall plot but solving the problem is what leads to all of Beth, Stella and Derek's adventures.

The only issue I have with the book is that it read like it was edited with spell check. There are fairly regular occurrences of missing, wrong, or extra words that make some parts of the book confusing until you figure out what the sentence was supposed to say, most of the time it is minor enough that your brain will automatically fill in the blank but there were more than a few times it was significant enough to be distracting.

The thing I like best about this book is that it does not, as many second books do, have the characters stop developing in favor of moving the plot along and you end up with increasingly catastrophic events pushing the protagonist through unlikely scenarios. Being able to balance charachter development and plot is one of the hallmarks of good storytelling and this author does a fine job. If you liked the first book you will enjoy this one too.
